Setting up in Canva

Canva works well for straightforward jobs — with a few settings you must turn on.

Applies to: Business cards, flyers and simple promotional print

We recommend Adobe Illustrator or InDesign for press-ready artwork; they give the most control. But Canva is a good option if you’re not a designer, and it handles simple print items well. Embellishments, specialty finishes and vector work are better suited to Illustrator or InDesign.

Some of the settings below are only available on a Canva Pro account — including the CMYK colour profile.

Step by step

  1. Turn the guides on

File › Settings, then select Show rulers and guides, Show margins and Show print bleed. The dark line around your artwork is the trim line — the finished size once the job is cut.

  2. Design past the trim line

Make sure background colours and images extend fully past the dark trim line into the bleed, so no white edges appear after trimming.

  3. Export it

Share › Download. Under File Type choose PDF Print, then tick Crop marks and bleed. Under colour profile select CMYK for more accurate printed colour.
