Embellishing: foil & raised varnish
Build the finish as a spot colour named Varnish, overprinted, on its own layer.
Applies to: Raised foil and raised UV on any product
Raised foil applies high, raised foil over chosen elements — in gold, silver, rose gold, copper, holographic silver, holographic gold, red, blue and green. Raised UV applies high-gloss raised varnish over chosen elements, and can go over any colour in your design. The setup below is identical for both.
Step by step
Create the spot colour
In the Swatches palette choose New Swatch. Name it Varnish, set Colour Type to Spot Colour, Colour Mode to CMYK, then C, M and K to 0% and Y to 100%.
Apply it
Select the objects or text you want foiled or varnished and change them to the Varnish swatch.
Set overprint
Open Attributes (Window › Attributes if it isn’t visible), select the Varnish objects and set them to Overprint Fill.
Move them to their own layer
Open the Layers panel, add a layer and name it Varnish. Select everything using the Varnish colour, click the Varnish layer, then right-click › Arrange › Send to Current Layer. Check it worked by selecting an object and confirming the selection ring matches the layer colour.
All trims, scores and folds need a minimum 5mm clearance from any UV. If you want UV to bleed to trims or run over scores and folds, talk to us first — it’s a non-standard process and needs to be quoted.
